Welcome

Welcome to [livejournal.com profile] buffyversemeta. The aim of this community is to get more meta essays about the Buffyverse posted and so we can all enjoy discussing the ideas raised.

The Metathon will work as follows:

  1. Week 1: people post ideas for subjects for meta essays.
  2. Week 2: members sign up and commit to post an essay on a particular subject on a particular date.
  3. July 2007: The essays are posted here.

Further details:

Suggesting Subjects

  • Subject ideas can be posted by anyone, whether they intend to write an essay or not. The point is to get as many ideas as possible.
  • Any individual can post as many subject ideas as they wish.
  • All subjects must be related to the Buffyverse in some way, beyond that there are no limitations on what is a suitable idea.
  • Make your suggestion in a comment to the subject list post. There is no time to waste so please start suggesting right away, we need as many as possible before June 18th.

  • You should become a member of the community before you sign up. (Membership is open and unmoderated. Join here.)
  • You may sign up to write as many essays as you wish.
  • Sign-up during the week of June 18th-24th
  • To sign up, pick a free date from the date selector by replying to that comment. Then pick a free subject from the subject list by replying to that comment with the date you have already picked.
  • If the subject you wanted is already taken, you may write it as a second essay and post on the date the original person chose. It would be appreciated if you also sign up for and write another essay that no-one else has chosen. (This is to ensure a wide range of subjects are covered.)

Posting Your Essay

  • Essays may be posted here, or on the writer's own journal with a link posted here.
  • All essays must be posted in public posts with comments, including anonymous comments, turned on.
  • All essays must be posted with the appropriate headers, tags and format for the convenience of future readers.
  • The writer undertakes to read all comments on their own essay and reply if appropriate.

Please feel free to pimp the community far and wide.

I think this is a *great* idea, vs the one-to-one ration of most ficathons.

Question: is it your intention that this community should be dedicated entirely to the metathon - just the essays people write for that, and discussion of them? Or do you see it being a more general forum where people could share other meta they might write as well?

Part of the reason I ask is because I've already written about half of an essay (which, as it happens, almost matches one of the subjects already suggested: the one about magic). I'm planning to post it in my own LJ, but wondered if a link here as well would be appropriate? (If it's not, no problem... I was just wondering what your policy was).

Hi, I'm curious, are you going to continue to accept essays after the 'metathon' ends or is this more open-ended? I'm currently working on an essay about Angel's war with W&H and the Senior Partners, primarily focused on Season Five, but I'm a very slow writer and am not sure when it will be finished. I would like to get it done before the comics come out but... who knows. Could I post it here after it's done?

Thanks! You answered all my questions. I've only been working on this one for a month and have about two pages. *sighs* I told you I'm slow. It's all in my mind, it's just getting the computer to make it coherent that's so frustrating. For some reason it keeps insisting I do it myself.

Hi Peasant,

I doubt you’ll remember after all this time but back when you were organizing the Metathon, I asked you about future plans for Buffyversemeta and said that I was looking for an eventual home for an essay on war in the Buffyverse. It’s been more than a year and I’ve hit some huge snags since then, partly due to the topic’s being so complex and because of time constraints, but primarily because of my having a bad memory, a disorganized mind and/or being prone to going back and tinkering all the time with what I’ve already written. The entire project is still a long way from being done but in an effort to clear the log jam -- and because it’s far too big to be posted at one time anyway -- I’ve decided to start posting separately those sections that are already closest to being completed. At least that way I’ll be rid of the temptation to constantly rewrite and revise and rearrange those particular sections. Maybe.

The first section, currently being revised (I know, I know… but it HAS to fit the new single-topic-at-a-time format!!!) deals with the amulet as a weapon not only intended to destroy the First Evil’s army but also as the Senior Partner’s first attempt to assassinate Spike. After that, in some order or other will be a general introduction to the main topic; sections on Angel’s using strategy and tactics from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War against the Senior Partners in Season Five; the resources Angel encountered while at W&H and how they might have affected his strategy, especially the cyborgs from Lineage; one on why I think Nina was a spy for the Senior Partners; Lindsey as a White Hat and why he’s probably not really dead… or if he is, why he shouldn‘t be; and then maybe one on Andrew, although much of his might end up being folded into Spike’s section… or the one on the amulet… or both. I’m having trouble deciding what to do with the one on Spike anyway since his demon soul being in control from post-Get It Done through late Season Five is part of another essay on vampires that got put aside to work on this one. So, who knows.

The reason I’m writing to you -- I know it’s a lot to ask -- but, as each section is finished, if you have time and are willing to do it, could you possibly give them a quick read-through and tell me if there’s anything I’ve forgotten or obviously gotten wrong or where I need to cut? I tend to overwrite -- a lot -- and also tend to preach or sound pretentious. It’s easier to write dispassionately and cleanly about things I don’t care about so much.

Also *cringes* I’m… um… going to need a little help with the LJ formatting. Just how to do all that… stuff… that’s necessary to make it readable… so not much help at all. Or perhaps whether I need to go to a PDF file format or something else.

I’m not sure who else to ask since I never talked much on-line anyway and have mostly lost touch since I began working on this project. While there are people I could turn to for the editing and formatting, none of them are in the fandom and they’d have a problem understanding the subject matter. I thought about turning to Shapinglight but she’s busy with Age of Unreason and I don’t want to push more on her. People would track me down and kill me if I caused any delays in her posting.

Would you be willing to help? Please feel free to say no if you’re not interested but I would appreciate anything you could do, even if it‘s just recommending someone else who‘d be a good ‘editor‘.

Sincerely,

Spartan5000

Oops, would actually help to read your comment to the previous poster, wouldn't it??? It looks like you are intending something open ended. It does still leave a question as to whether only the essays on the list are open to review or can I slip one in later?
