I doubt you’ll remember after all this time but back when you were organizing the Metathon, I asked you about future plans for Buffyversemeta and said that I was looking for an eventual home for an essay on war in the Buffyverse. It’s been more than a year and I’ve hit some huge snags since then, partly due to the topic’s being so complex and because of time constraints, but primarily because of my having a bad memory, a disorganized mind and/or being prone to going back and tinkering all the time with what I’ve already written. The entire project is still a long way from being done but in an effort to clear the log jam -- and because it’s far too big to be posted at one time anyway -- I’ve decided to start posting separately those sections that are already closest to being completed. At least that way I’ll be rid of the temptation to constantly rewrite and revise and rearrange those particular sections. Maybe.
The first section, currently being revised (I know, I know… but it HAS to fit the new single-topic-at-a-time format!!!) deals with the amulet as a weapon not only intended to destroy the First Evil’s army but also as the Senior Partner’s first attempt to assassinate Spike. After that, in some order or other will be a general introduction to the main topic; sections on Angel’s using strategy and tactics from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War against the Senior Partners in Season Five; the resources Angel encountered while at W&H and how they might have affected his strategy, especially the cyborgs from Lineage; one on why I think Nina was a spy for the Senior Partners; Lindsey as a White Hat and why he’s probably not really dead… or if he is, why he shouldn‘t be; and then maybe one on Andrew, although much of his might end up being folded into Spike’s section… or the one on the amulet… or both. I’m having trouble deciding what to do with the one on Spike anyway since his demon soul being in control from post-Get It Done through late Season Five is part of another essay on vampires that got put aside to work on this one. So, who knows.
The reason I’m writing to you -- I know it’s a lot to ask -- but, as each section is finished, if you have time and are willing to do it, could you possibly give them a quick read-through and tell me if there’s anything I’ve forgotten or obviously gotten wrong or where I need to cut? I tend to overwrite -- a lot -- and also tend to preach or sound pretentious. It’s easier to write dispassionately and cleanly about things I don’t care about so much.
Also *cringes* I’m… um… going to need a little help with the LJ formatting. Just how to do all that… stuff… that’s necessary to make it readable… so not much help at all. Or perhaps whether I need to go to a PDF file format or something else.
I’m not sure who else to ask since I never talked much on-line anyway and have mostly lost touch since I began working on this project. While there are people I could turn to for the editing and formatting, none of them are in the fandom and they’d have a problem understanding the subject matter. I thought about turning to Shapinglight but she’s busy with Age of Unreason and I don’t want to push more on her. People would track me down and kill me if I caused any delays in her posting.
Would you be willing to help? Please feel free to say no if you’re not interested but I would appreciate anything you could do, even if it‘s just recommending someone else who‘d be a good ‘editor‘.
